Proper grammar is all the rage these days. As twitter limits our conversations to 140 character chunks of text, it’s easy to let “you’re” become “ur” and “too” become “2”. But many professionals and educators aren’t so forgiving. Experts insist that grammatical competence and proper spelling are integral characteristics of productive, intelligent members of society. Not to mention you can instantly eliminate yourself from many job pools with grammar and spelling mistakes on your resume (just see this article on Grammarly for details).

While there are many tools to assist the average person with writing basics, it’s a good idea to have a solid foundation to avoid common mistakes. Read on for five mobile apps you can access on your iPad to brush up on sentence structure and vocabulary. If you feel confident in your own abilities, share these programs with children or non-native English speakers who can benefit from learning spelling and grammar tricks on a fun learning platform.

Vocabology gives you the word of the day from multiple sources across the Internet. You can test your knowledge with quiz games based on the words you’ve learned through the program. The app, which currently has four and a half stars from reviewers, helps users build their vocabulary through a variety of devices. Vocabology is available on the ipad, iphone, and ipod touch and can be purchased for $.99 through the itunes store.

Grammar Fun Free

Grammar Fun helps kids of all ages learn proper grammar by identifying grammatical constructs (noun, verb, adjective, and adverb) in a sentence. This free app is a great way to teach basic parts of speech to younger students on an iphone, ipad, or ipod touch.

Kids Word Match HD

The Kids Word Match App teaches kids hundreds of words using corresponding images and graphics. It is a fun, interactive way for youngsters to learn spelling and pronunciation. It is ipad compatible.

SAT 1500 Words Challenge

This free ipad app features challenging and interactive games against other online users in real time. In addition to an extensive vocabulary list with definitions, sample sentences, and audio, the interactive game makes learning vocab that much more fun.

Practice English Grammar 2

Practice English Grammar contains many of grammar lessons and quizzes to test what you’ve learned. The app includes more than 500 questions on 16 different topics, which helps users practice English grammar fundamentals. The app is free and available for iphones and ipads.

These five applications are among the many that are available to iPad users and helpful in preventing you from making common grammar mistakes. The Kindle Fire has its own app database through Amazon that includes a considerable number of vocab and spelling games as well.

While Grammarly is my preferred spelling and grammar tool (see Grammarly on Pinterest), they haven’t yet released a mobile app. Their product is slightly less focused on teaching the basics of grammar and instead perfects higher-quality writing and offers explanations for corrections. I’m looking forward to a mobile version, or at the very least, a fun grammar or spelling game. Fingers crossed something comes along in the next couple of months. The one bonus that they do have, though, is the Grammarly Chrome Extension – if you are a Chrome user, this is a must-install.
